Should Mark Zuckerberg Have Stayed in School?

Mark Zuckerberg. Does the name ring a bell? Of course, it’s the CEO of Facebook!

As the media watches Zuckerberg weave through one disaster after another, we can’t help but wonder one of the ways in which he could have spared himself – and the rest of humanity – all this trouble. What if he had simply stayed in school?

After dropping out, “young Mark decided to follow in the footsteps of Harvard dropout Bill Gates and pursue Silicon Valley venture capitalists over Cambridge academics”. At this stage, Zuckerberg had already gathered enough knowledge in programming to create a viable product and gained an abundant amount of connections that he could potentially use to his advantage to get his start-up running. Nevertheless, it was his persistence and unwavering dedication that made Facebook as successful as it is now.

He essentially dropped out of the prestigious college of Harvard (Class 2006) in order to pursue the start-up of Facebook –  been barely 20 years old meaning that his brain hasn’t been fully formed as of yet. By foregoing a college education, Zuckerberg limited and denied himself to valuable life-lessons and information that could be used in his business, and essentially avoid simple mistakes. Now, this company and the public is paying for this mistakes.

As of late, Zuckerberg has been attacked for his lack of knowledge in the social media world. For example, last year – the Facebook CEO went under “fire” for a series of crisis like the spread of fake news by Russian trolled and the “alleged exploitation of Facebook user data by political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election.” Yes, Zuckerberg has apologised profusely after the fact for helping to drive an uproar of controversies, and promised to make changes ASAP. However, why if he chose to study the important elements of working democracy, both in America and internationally and this situation may have been avoided.

Moreover, college gives students the ability to think critically and develop the necessary skills for their specific profession. The misconceptions that college “rule the world” are staggeringly rare exceptions and students are advised to finish their degrees. At the end of the day, there will be only one Mark Zuckerberg and here are 3 lessons from him that everyone can learn from:

Have The Freedom to Fail – The world doesn’t come easily, and it doesn’t give out handouts. You have to work tirelessly for it. So, have lots of ideas and use that to your advantage to build many things and see what works at the end! Because, “the greatest successes come from having the freedom to fail.” Essentially, have a ‘go big or go home’ attitude.

A Business Is Never One-Man – A business cannot be successful without great or equally smart individuals around the CEO. Trust those around you – those who constantly challenge your idea, motivate you to be better and continue standing next to you when you make a mistake.

Explore Before You Commit – Individuals commonly “blindly jump on the bandwagon and follow every popular trend” without the necessary research. This could potentially result in taking risks that aren’t worth it and individuals landing in trouble. So, accordingly to Mark – take risks, but calculated ones!

However, if Zuckerberg graduated Harvard – then Facebook may have never happened or would have started two years later. How odd!
